Description
Towards the latter half of his career, Jack London shifted some of his focus away from his popular Klondike stories and began to write about another land that fascinated him: Hawaii. He had visited the islands a few times and adored the beautiful tropical scenery. "The House of Pride and Other Tales of Hawaii" was published in 1912 and features six short stories set on the islands. The themes of the tales include racism, class struggle and leprosy. “The House of Pride,” for example, is about a young wealthy missionary who discovers that a mixed race individual whom he hates is actually his half brother. “Aloha Oe” presents a teenage girl who struggles with her love for a mixed race boy. The tales about leprosy, such as “Good-Bye, Jack” and “The Sheriff of Kona” feature themes of public perception, rights for lepers and the struggles of contracting the disease. All six of the stories are among London’s most entertaining works and provide readers with dramatic, thought provoking and emotional scenes that are likely to leave a lasting impression.
