Guy Barnes holding Boyd on the back of a sheep in front of the barn on the Castle homestead. Eventually, Barnes got rid of his cattle and sheep herds and leased the pastures to others. To supplement his income, he worked for Holy Cross Electric and worked on the construction of Highway 6 & 24.

Sod-roofed log cabin, in the yard at the "Baily Place," currently (1986) owned by Ben Wurtsmith. John Bailey homesteaded this area of Burns, Colorado, in the 1890's.

The door of the cabin is open displaying a plank wood floor. Snow is piled on top and draping over the edges. Spots in center are fading photograph.

Sallie Welsh (Hartman) was the first woman in Eagle County to graduate from college (University of Denver) and later served as Superintendent of Schools in Eagle County. She married the son of a friend of John Welsh. Charles Hartman was sent to work for John Welsh and a few years later married Sallie. They took over the ranch and lived there until 1930 when the ranch was lost due to financial problems. They had four children, three boys and a girl....

The first chapter of the typescript "Early Days on the Eagle" written by MacDonald Knight. This chapter may be from his thesis (1953) or was part of the final published verison of the book (1964). After serving overseas in the army, he came home and moved directly to Holy Cross City, an isolated mining camp. Herman Newquist's family arrived in the Eagle Valley around 1920. The family would homestead near Bellyache Mountain and Herman has described his childhood, family, and events of the area in several small manuscripts. This manuscript focuses on the years of pilgrimages up Mount of the Holy Cross led by Dr. O.W. Randall or "Doc Randall". The Tigiwon shelter and community house, built during the Great Depression, became a focal point for gatherings...

"Brush Creek Valley, Township 5 South, Range 84 West of the 6th Principal Meridian, the area at hte mouth of Breek Creek between the Eagle River and the railroad tracks and west of Brush Creek. Ditch is Lower Rule, Priority #137, Spring in 1884 by H.E. Rule. The ditches are located by right bank or left bank and this is determined by facing downstream. This is supposed to be the original settlers of the Brush Creek Valley."

Ethel Boies was born and rasied in Red Cliff, Colorado. In 1918, she married Howard G. Bayer, well-known in Minturn and Red Cliff through his involvement with many youth organizations. Ethel's typescript focuses on early days of Red Cliff and the surrounding areas of Eagle and Lake County (Leadville). Many mines, miners, mine benefactors, assay numbers, and mine locations are also mentioned.

This is the original John Cowden family homestead cabin, which was moved about a half a mile from it's original site on Bellyache. Jack Oleson reconstructed the cabin on the Diamond S ranch.

77) Stage stop

The restored Wohlgehagen cabin, while titled the "stage stop" by Diamond S ranch residents, was very likely not the actual stage stop on Bellyache. Rather, this is Anna Wohlgehagen's homestead cabin that has been re-built and re-located. According to Jack Oleson, the real stage stop was likely located at the head of Squaw Creek and was not salvageable.

Bob Cowden, whose parents homesteaded on Bellyache, assisted with the tour of the Diamond S historical sites. The original Cowden cabin was rebuilt by Jack Oleson in 2009.
