John Wesley Philips, Rhoda Rockwood's father, who was instrumental in building the Gore Creek School in 1886 (circa). Rhoda attended the school which met for only three months, in the summer. She crossed three creeks to get there. There is a dog at the right side of the photo.

The Avon School after the addition. The front was extended and the belfry was added. The addition to the back has not yet been done which dates the photo as 1920-21. A group of students is seated at the side of the building.

Original Avon School before addition, taken prior to 1915. The horse barn has not been built. Fence surrounding school yard visible. Shows the Eagle River on right with "water spruce" hanging over the river and Johnson Lane (named for homesteader Joe Johnson) that was the road into Bachelor Gulch. The frame construction Antelope School building, completed in 1917, which replaced the original log school building completed in 1912. The log building became the teacherage.
