24. Brooks Bridge

"The Brooks Bridge, built by the railroad company during construction of the Dotsero Cutoff, replaced an earlier one near the same site. It is now in a sad state or repair and unsafe for other than light traffic. Adjacent to the north end of it is the railroad track and it was here that Leonard Horn had the misfortune to be caught by a train while driving cattle across the bridge, resulting in the loss of several head that were struck by the train."...

27. Winter break

"A group of McCoy folks at Ocean Beach, Calif. during the winter of 1917-18. They are: Craig Rhodes, Al Norman, Arthur Horn, Mrs. Norman, Leonard and Harold Horn. Craig's folks had owned and lived on what later became the Panting ranch. During the World War One years, many ranchers and farmers were eating high off the hog and could afford to spend the winters in southern California or Arizona, buy automobiles and splurge on luxuries." -- McCoy Memoirs...

The house was built in 1880-90's. It was moved from Keystone mines near Oak Creek in 1944 to the Leonard Horn Ranch. The house was sawed in half to get accross the frozen Colorado River at State Bridge in order to make the move. There is a barbed wire fence in the foreground and a rug airing on the porch rail.

Location of the section house at Kent. Milk Creek is at the center of the photo. This is called "Flynn's curve" -- Jim Flynn derailed a train at the curve. No one was hurt.
35. Horn Ranch

"The Horn ranch house on Rock Creek, two and one half miles above McCoy, as it was in 1917. Homesteaders Alvin Hart and Rooks built the cabin with the fireplace, the rest was added on by the Horns. The two bedrooms upstairs and the ground floor was the living room, the fireplace room served as a bunkhouse for ranch hands. "Built in 1915, this house on the Schrupp ranch replaced the homestead cabin of 1905 which was much too small for a large family. After Mrs. Schrupp's death in 1913, the older children began leaving home one at a time until Mr. Schrupp passed away in 1938. Henry Schrupp then operated the ranch until Charley and Josephine Ray bought it and lived here before selling the ranch to Raymond Horn, many years later. Since then, the house has remained vacant."...
