Lizzie Hernage, 24, and her husband Henry were among the first pioneers to arrive in the valley, homesteading at the mouth of Brush Creek in 1882. On July 29, 1885 Henry and Lizzie were moving a herd of cattle across a rickety bridge over the Eagle River when the weight of the load caused the bridge to collapse. Lizzie drowned.
